Ask about the complete luminaire

The Australian Government’s energy guidance notes that LED quality can vary and encourages careful product selection. For a project discussion, ask for information about the complete fitting being proposed, rather than assuming that all products carrying an LED label are interchangeable.

Describe the visual task

List the activities that the proposed lighting is intended to support. A garden path, an entrance and an access road can present different questions. Include photographs looking both towards and away from the proposed light positions, so the conversation can cover how the surroundings will be experienced.

Discuss light distribution and control

Ask where the light will fall and how the proposed layout relates to boundaries and adjacent spaces. If dimming or automatic operation is part of the brief, identify it early. Government energy guidance describes controls and sensors as part of an integrated lighting strategy; compatibility needs to be established for the proposed equipment.

Keep the specification traceable

Request the product documentation, proposed configuration and the basis of any performance statement. Keep those records with the design information so later decisions can be checked against the brief. Avoid selecting a fitting solely because it looks similar to a photograph or has a familiar technology label.

YOUR PROJECT CHECKLIST

Bring these points to the conversation.

  • Define the activities the light is intended to support.
  • Request information for the complete proposed fitting.
  • Identify control requirements before selection.
  • Keep product documentation with the agreed design brief.
